Being a mother and future teacher (it was once my profession) my focus was on my family and ambitions. People all around me partied–the college kids went to bars almost every night of the week; my boyfriend drank and/or snorted coke and pills daily; and family members did much of the same. I didn’t think it’s what a mother or teacher did, so I abstained.

This all flashed through my mind as I was being walked out of the bar by the police along with a very belligerent frat boy.
